    The winery takes its name from a priest named Balstard and from La Tonnelle, a stone tower that still stands in the middle of the winery. The winery has a long history dating back to the 15th century.

    Francois Villon, France's greatest 15th-century poet, praised the chateau's wines in a poem. Later, with the permission of the French government, the poem was printed on the wine label of the chateau.

    This makes the chateau the only wine in the world with a verse on its label.
